School Elections 2007
Amendments to the
Act Respecting School Elections (R.S.Q., chapter E-2.3) have
been put into place so as to change the date of these elections.
Henceforth, school elections will be held on the first Sunday
in November rather than on the third Sunday.
The elections are presently scheduled to take place on Sunday,
November 4, 2007.
Division of Territory
Prior to 31 December of the year preceding school elections,
the Act Respecting School Elections (R.S.Q., chapter E-2.3) requires
school boards to divide their territory into electoral
divisions. The number of electoral divisions is established
as a factor of the number of registered electors on the school
board’s electoral list. The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board’s
electoral list is comprised of 31 491 electors. This translates
into 17 authorized electoral divisions. In view of the size of
the school board territory, the Council of Commissioners may request
a derogation to the assigned number of electoral divisions. In
January, 2006, the Council of Commissioners of the Sir Wilfrid
Laurier School Board adopted a resolution requesting the Ministère
de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS) to authorize
a derogation and maintain the number of electoral divisions at
19. In June, 2006, the school board was given the authorization
to divide its territory on the basis of 19 electoral divisions.
In accordance with the Act, the Council of Commissioners of the
Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board will adopt “in principle”
a proposal for the division of territory for the purposes of establishing
electoral divisions, at its regular meeting scheduled for September
27, 2006. This proposal will be subject to a public consultation.
After a study of the comments and suggestions received, in writing,
as a part of the consultation, the Council of Commissioners of
the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board will adopt a final version
of its electoral divisions for the November 4, 2007 election.
A public notice pertaining to the division of territory for the
purposes of establishing electoral divisions will be posted in
all of the schools and centres of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School
Board. This notice will, likewise, appear in a newspaper distributed
within the territory of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board.
Interested parties may examine the proposal on the division of
territory for the purposes of establishing electoral divisions
by presenting themselves at the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board
Administration Centre located at 235, montée Lesage, Rosemère
(Québec) between 9:00 hours and 16:00 hours, Monday to
Friday.
