Career opportunities related to sustainable development

A career in the environmental industry can be fun and rewarding, especially if it fits 
well with your personal values.  If you have the environment at heart and want to 
do something to solve environmental issues, there are countless paths for you to reach 
your goal.  It may be useful for you to take a look at these career opportunities and 
see which ones interest you the most.  These are, however, only a fraction of the 
possible career paths that lead to helping the environment.  The sustainable 
development sector is continually changing with new technologies and new opportunities 
to make a difference.  The push toward a greener future is just beginning, and hopefully 
the Canadian government will follow suit with Barack Obama and his plan to promote 
new green technologies.

The following examples may help you choose some career paths and eliminate others.

Secondary studies:

Energy efficiency equipment installer;
Geothermal field installer;
Constructor of equipment or vehicles that pollute less.

College studies:

Science and Nature;
Social studies;

Technical studies:

Architecture technology;
Collaboration with architects;
Design/drafting of “green” buildings.

Building systems technology:
Optimizing existing buildings so they consume less energy and pollute less;
Collaborating with engineers and architects for "green" building design.

Instrumentation and controls technology:
Supervising and optimizing buildings’ mechanical and electrical systems (heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, etc.) with centralized control systems in order to make them more energy efficient and less polluting;
Collaborate with engineers to implement new centralized control systems in new buildings.

Mechanical engineering technology:
Collaborate with engineers for the design, fabrication, or automation of products reducing energy waste, resource waste or pollution.

Electrical engineering technology:
Design more efficient electrical systems or equipment for buildings or industries;
Collaborate on various projects with electrical engineers.

Industrial design technology:
Design tomorrow’s vehicles and products, keeping in mind the use of green technology and efficient designs.

Information technology:
Manage the centralized control system of a building as well as upgrade or fine-tune the programs running these systems.

Geological technology:
Study potential construction sites for future buildings to ensure that they minimize environmental impact;
Survey the ground prior to geothermal system installations.

Survey technology:
Survey potential construction sites for future buildings to minimize environmental impact.

University studies

Mechanical engineering:
Designing more efficient buildings, equipment or transportation systems;
Designing high efficiency heating, cooling or ventilation systems;
Optimizing or fine-tuning industrial production lines to reduce energy waste;
Construction Manager (or Project Manager) in sustainable development related projects;

Electrical engineering:
Design the most efficient equipment for electricity generation or distribution (electrical turbines, alternators, hydrogen fuel cells, etc.);
Construction or site manager for a renewable energy electricity plant (wind or solar power, for instance);
Project manager for sustainable development projects.

Chemical engineering:
Design hydrogen fuel cells;
Project manager for polluted site decontamination;
R&D to recover energy from new cleaner sources;
R&D to recycle or include old materials in newer products;

Green building design;
Site manager for a green building construction site;

Urban planning:
City counsellor for infrastructures development;
To develop and promote new neighbourhood development with less environmental impact.

Managing a company that promotes energy efficiency or sells energy efficiency products or solutions;
Managing a company that improves the efficiency of transportation systems;
Managing any company that helps reduce the human environmental footprint.

Promoting the benefits of some products, services or technologies that contribute to reducing pollution or GHG emissions.

Explaining, in financial terms, the possible financial savings to a company for adopting a "green" product, service or technology.

To mobilize the community toward sustainable development projects;
To suggest and vote laws contributing to the reduction of our society's environmental footprint.
